We are proud of the efforts of the City and the Guemes Channel Trail Committee to keep this effort moving forward.
There have been work parties to plant trees along the completed sections. A hardy group of volunteers hit the trail early in the morning to water and weed. Not all of the trees survive in spite of best efforts but replanting goes on.
There has been a lot of thought going into the section of the trail from Edwards Way to Washington State Ferry. A map with conceptual trail has some residents concerned about possible encroachment into a 110′ buffer above the SHIP wetland. The city has taken comment from the public and is giving great consideration to environmental impact in placement of the trail. Work is ongoing to find a compromise in trail placement. This important section of trail is essential for the safety of people attempting to get into old town without the need to traverse SR20.
Testimony has been given to City Council and Mayor Gere. We trust that they weigh pros and cons and make wise decisions that benefit our entire community.
As summer approaches we hope that you are out enjoying the beauty of the completed trail section!
